Creating a healthy hair care regimen is easier than you might think. It’s all about finding the right balance between what your hair needs and what fits into your lifestyle. Over the years, I’ve found that consistency, patience, and the right products make all the difference. Let’s break it down together.
The first step in building a great hair care regimen is simplicity. Start by identifying your hair’s needs based on its type and texture. Once you understand what your hair requires, choose the right products to meet those needs. Believe it or not, you only need five essential hair care products – a shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner that doubles as a heat protectant, oil, and a styling product. Find out more about the essentials here.
Next, think about how often you need to wash your hair. Some people only need to wash once a week, while others prefer twice a week or every other day. In more active lifestyles, daily washing may even be necessary. The key is to be intentional. Plan your wash days, dedicate time for conditioning, and stay consistent. Healthy, beautiful hair doesn’t just happen by chance; it takes routine and care.
Your lifestyle plays a major role in maintaining healthy hair. For example, if your job requires you to be well-groomed and you use hot tools daily, remember that excessive heat can damage your hair shaft. Try to limit hot tool use to twice a week and, if you must blow-dry daily, use a low heat setting to minimise damage.
If you’re a gym regular, be mindful of sweat, tight hairstyles, and overuse of dry shampoo. These can lead to dryness, breakage, or scalp issues if you’re not cleansing properly afterwards. Swimmers should also take precautions. Always wear a swim cap and follow up with a detox shampoo and deep conditioning treatment to protect the hair from chlorine.
Those who frequently tie their hair up should avoid tight hairstyles and wet hair ties, which can cause tension and breakage. Instead, use silk or bamboo scrunchies, tie hair loosely, and vary your style to avoid stress on the same area.
If your job involves wearing a hat or helmet for long periods, this can also lead to scalp sweating or breakage from friction. A protective style can help reduce damage. And for those working in kitchens, daily washing may be necessary to remove odours, just remember to deep condition weekly to replenish lost moisture.
Your daily habits directly affect your hair’s health, so it’s worth taking the time to create a routine that fits your life while keeping your hair in its best condition.
For reference, I have type 3B curly, mixed, afro-textured hair, and my regimen is simple but effective.
Weekly Routine
I wash my hair once a week, shampooing twice and deep conditioning for at least 10–30 minutes. After gently drying with a microfibre towel, I apply Keune Velvet Smooth 2 Phase Spray and the Nanokeratin Reinvent Insulator for protection. I then blow-dry using my Revlon One-Step Brush and straighten with Alfa Italia Titanium Irons at 190°C – I only use heat once a week. Finally, I finish with one pump of Keune Radiant Gloss Oil for added shine and softness.
Daily Routine
Each morning, I let my hair down and style it into a half-up, low ponytail or bun. I use Keune Free Styler early in the week for hold, and Keune Good Fibes later in the week to avoid product build-up.
Night Routine
Before bed, I gently comb my hair using a soft Tangle Teezer and apply oil to the mid-lengths and ends. I tie my hair back loosely with a silk bamboo scrunchie and sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase – changing it every few days.
I get many compliments on my hair, and the truth is, it’s all about consistency. When you dedicate time and care, the results will always show.
