Over several weeks, I (Shareefa, Style Director at Cognito Hair) tested each oil individually to see how they performed on my 3B Afro-textured hair, which I typically wear straight. I applied oils after washing, blow-drying, and straightening, then continued nightly with one pump or pipette before bed.
Here’s what I found:
Royal Tribute Serum felt incredibly luxurious and smelled divine. However, it’s the heaviest of the three oils, and even with a small amount, my hair started to feel weighed down by day three. For this reason, I’d recommend using it sparingly; it’s best added to your wash day routine or mixed with your favourite hair mask once a month. This oil is perfect for swimmers, those with heavily coloured hair, or anyone needing intense nourishment.
Smooth Operator, on the other hand, was a dream to use. Lightweight, silky, and beautifully scented, it gave my hair a smooth, soft shine without build-up. Even by day five, I didn’t need to reapply; my hair still felt great. It’s an excellent everyday oil for anyone wanting frizz control and a weightless finish.
Finally, Radiant Gloss (previously Satin Oil) was hands-down my favourite. It’s incredibly light and has a subtle floral scent. My hair absorbed it beautifully, leaving it soft, shiny, and smooth – never greasy. It even performed brilliantly when used before blow-drying alongside my usual heat protectant, giving salon-worthy results.
Verdict: Radiant Gloss wins! It’s the perfect all-rounder, hydrating, lightweight, and suitable for most hair types and textures.
