How often should I visit the Hairdressers?

How often should you visit the salon

How often should I visit the hairdressers? This is a question that I get asked often and to be honest it all depends on the individual. What you are trying to achieve, what service you are getting done and above all, how much you care about your hair.

Hair grows depending on how well you look after your hair and how well you fuel your body with vital nutrition. Everyone’s hair will grow at different rates and at three distinct stages.

Before we go into more detailed time periods, first, I have a few questions for you…

Are you loyal to your hairstylists or do you find yourself being a salon wanderer?

The reason I ask this question is that if you do not take the time to build a relationship with your stylist and remain loyal, the harder it will be to reach your desired hair goals.

Getting your desired hairstyle or colour will not always happen on your first visit. So the key here is trust, patience and giving your hairstylist the chance to work with your hair. Okay sure, you may have had an unpleasant experience with a stylist and never want to return and unfortunately, this happens. Even to the best of us… but Hey, don’t give up! There is the perfect stylist out there waiting for you, to nurture your hair and take you on a journey to beautiful hair.

Do you know your hair goals?

When you go to the hair salon, are you completely prepared with a catalogue of pictures or is it the case that you just don’t have a clue what you want? Or, you simply didn’t think about it?

Many times, we can leave the hair salon not happy because we were unable to articulate what exactly it is we wanted. A consultation is your time to communicate with your stylist what your desired look is. Having visuals are so important to help communicate this, whether that will be a colour or cut. This is so both you and your stylist are visually on the same page and so your stylist can advise you accordingly depending on your hair type, texture, length, colour, hair condition etc…

Are you willing to invest in your hair?

SAVE! You would save for that all expensive holiday, why not for your hair? A holiday will be a distant memory before you know it. Your hair will be there to greet you as you wake every morning. So why not invest time, care and money into it. I don’t know about you, but if my hair is not good I don’t feel too great myself.

Healthy hair comes at a cost and it is so worth it! It is important to invest time in regular visits to the hairdressers as well as investing in good products. Creating a hair regime that will suit your hair care needs and lifestyle. A visit to the hairdressers should not be a quick fix because you let your hair go wild. It should be an enjoyable visit that has been carefully planned and discussed alongside your hairstylist. Who should be giving you the very best personal advice through their explicit knowledge.

Our hair experts at Cognito Hair will help find the perfect style, hair products and regime for you!

Here is a basic guideline, which I am sure, will help you plan your visits to the hairdressers…

Cutting your hair

If you want to maintain your hair length, cut and shape; it is recommended that you visit the hairdressers for a regular cut every 4 – 6 weeks on shorter styles and 6 – 8 weeks on mid-length styles, considering the hair grows on average half an inch a month.

For longer lengths or If you want to grow your hair. It is important to keep your hair healthy by still getting regular cuts, the longer your hair the more prone you are to breakage and split ends. Between 10 – 12 weeks is an appropriate period to keep those long tresses healthy. However, I would not leave it any longer than 12 weeks. Otherwise, you are in danger of breakage and the hair becoming generally dry, brittle and limp. If you do have your haircut every 12 weeks, be sure to visit your stylist at the halfway point for treatment and blow-dry to keep your hair in its best condition.

Colouring your hair

Highlighted hair can be retouched every 6 – 10 weeks. Depending on the style of highlights, the natural colour of your hair and how quickly your hair grows. Balayage and freehand colour that results in the colour not being applied close to the roots can be retouched every 12 – 16 weeks. As these are low-maintenance colour – although, they are not suitable for everyone.

Root tints or any colour that needs to be applied directly to the roots should be considered every 4 – 8 weeks. Depending on the shade and depth. If you are still uncertain how often you should visit the hairdressers. Speak to your stylist and they can advise you accordingly.

Our Hair Experts at Cognito Hair highly recommend a Bond Repairing Treatment after your colour service. Or alongside a cut to maintain optimum hair health and strength. Alternatively, you can visit us in between services for that little extra hair and scalp pampering session.
