5 ways to take care of Afro hair this season

5 ways to take care of Afro Hair

Moisture is a must this season and every season for afro hair. Here are five ways to take care of your afro hair this season!

1. Keep your hair and scalp hydrated

Try using a water-based leave-in conditioner in addition to your styling products. A good leave-in conditioner should be lightweight, this is so you can distribute it evenly throughout your hair and scalp without weighing it down. We love, love, LOVE the Nanokeratin Reinvent Insulator! It has a lightweight texture and will protect your afro hair against damaging environmental factors. It also provides anti-dryness protection under heat as well as enhancing the hairs natural shine.

2. Deep condition your Afro hair

From one curly girl to another, we know that hair wash day is a chore, just thinking about detangling is enough to demotivate you. Since we know it’s going to be hard work let’s always make it the best hair wash day EVER! Use a moisture-based treatment mask that can be applied to freshly washed and towel-dried hair. Leave to deeply condition for 30mins then rinse (mix in a little oil for extra conditioning). If preferred, use an overnight treatment mask which you can sleep in and rinse out in the morning.

Once styled, the best way to maintain moisture is to apply a light oil daily, such as argan or jojoba. Remember, less is more so only apply a small amount; your hair will only absorb what it needs. The rest will only sit on the surface of the hair, this will just make the hair greasy, cause product build-up and will add no extra benefits to moisturising afro hair.

3. Be careful with those hats and scarves

Hats and scarves are the perfect accessories to jazz up any outfit in winter, however, it can wreak havoc on our beautiful locks; causing dryness, snagging, matting and even breakage, so choose wisely. To avoid friction, use a hat that has a silk lining and scarves that have a softer touch. Alternatively, you could tie your hair into a loose bun or braid until you reach your destination, then unravel all that beauty or keep it so, whichever you choose!

4.  Regular visits to the salon

That’s right my natural hair and curly hair girls – salon visits are a must for afro hair! If you find the right hair stylists you will be running to the salon. As much as deep conditioning at home weekly is important for maintenance, having an in-salon treatment is essential for strengthening afro hair and locking in moisture. I always say leave the protein treatments to the professionals, as they will be able to analyse the hair and know exactly which protein treatments will be suitable for your afro hair and type. Having these treatments every 6 weeks will truly transform your hair.

5. Let’s prevent split ends

Don’t forget to book in for that haircut too. Yes, cutting, trimming, dusting your hair on a regular basis is vitally important in maintaining healthy afro hair and preventing split ends. We recommend every 12 weeks alongside a bond repairing treatment for curly hair and afro hair textures. That’s only 4 times a year, with treatments every 6 weeks that’s 8 visits to the hair salon every year; with 365 days in a year, 8 visits almost do not seem enough, does it? Nevertheless, these visits will take you on a journey to incredibly healthy hair that you just can’t keep your hands off!

So, let’s go on this journey together… We can’t wait to meet you soon and see you at the salon! ?

Until next time ladies…
