How to Protect Coloured Hair and Prevent Colour Fade

Protect Coloured Hair

Time and time again as colour specialists we are asked; how can I protect my coloured hair? Or, how can I prevent my colour from fading?

Well, it’s no mystery, honest. The application of these simple steps will make all the difference.

Regular visits to the salon

Working together with your hairdresser to create routine salon visits is essential in the prevention of colour fade. There are so many influencing factors that contribute to colour fade. This can be seasonal changes in weather, environmental pollutants, heat appliances, sun exposure, hard water, mineral build-up and chlorine; just to name a few. Some are avoidable and others not so much, this is why regular visits to the salon can help protect coloured hair.

Naturally, visits to the salon all depend on the colour service you have, whether you have an all-over colour or highlights. Typically, visits to the salon should range from 6 to 10 weeks for tints and semi-permanent hair colouring,12 – 16 weeks for colours that require foil work such as highlights and balayage. There are many options to keep your hair colour looking fresh at home, in-between salon visits. Our hair care experts will equipped you with all the information you need, creating a bespoke hair care regime to help you on your hair care journey.

A Bond Repairing Treatment is also essential to prevent your colour from fading and to keep your hair in optimum condition and protect coloured hair.

Aftercare designed perfectly for coloured hair

Using the right aftercare products is the next step to preventing colour fade and protecting coloured hair. We supply a wide range of sustainable hair care products by Keune hair cosmetics and they are all safe to use on coloured hair. They have a pH balance of 3.5 to 5.5 which will help regulate the hair and scalp, seal the cuticle layer of the hair preventing further oxidation after a colour service. Using a leave-in conditioner that triples as a heat protector and UV ray protector is a crucial step to protect your hair all year round.

Handle with care

Keune’s care range is professional science-backed hair care solutions enriched with essential mineral complex to treat the hair and nourish the scalp.  Zinc is an antioxidant that stimulates the development of new cells. Copper promotes hair growth by boosting the formation of disulfide cross linkages. Silicium ensures the formation of collagen and connective tissues, which make up hair. Iron is absolutely vital for protein formulation and acts as a carrier of oxygen throughout the body, energizing the scalp and making hair gorgeously glossy. Magnesium sustains energy production and ensures a healthy mineral balance.

Keune Colour Brillianz aftercare range has a unique Color Sealing Complex which creates a protective barrier around hair strands. With UVA and UVB filters providing protection from the sun preventing colour fade. Sunflower seed extract provides extra protection against free radicals and environmental stressors whilst nourishing the hair. This range is your hair care solution for silky, shiny, vibrant hair for colour that lasts.

Keune Tinta Colour aftercare range has a sulphate free and gluten free shampoo and gluten free conditioner. It has a special formula that features silk proteins for silky, smooth, shiny hair, LP300 colour stabilisers and Solamer UV protection which are the same powerhouse ingredients found in the Tinta Colour products. It will nourish the hair and provide long lasting colour protection and durability.

Protect your hair from heat

Excessive heat is the enemy to coloured hair, not only can hot styling tools cause damage to the hair shaft by weakening the hair, it increases split ends. This includes washing your hair with hot water, which not only causes dry brittle hair, it also causes a dry irritated scalp. Both hair care practices can damage and fade coloured hair rapidly.

So, what’s the solution? Wash you hair with tepid water, which is between 15°C to 37°C meaning the water should not exceed the body’s natural temperature. When using electrical hot tools, go low and go slow using controlled heat. This can be anything between 90° to 200°C, depending on your hair type. It should not exceed 200°C, temperatures above 200°C should only be used by professional hair stylists within good reason. A heat protector is non-negotiable when drying your hair, in fact a leave-in conditioner that doubles up as a heat protectant is an absolute must whether you dry your hair or not. Your hair is essentially a fibre which is closely related to sheep’s wool. You wouldn’t throw your cashmere jumper into a hot wash, so let’s treat our hair with the same loving care because our hair is priceless and the right haircare is essential.

It’s time to make the necessary changes and take the right steps to create beautiful, healthy coloured hair with a bit of self-care… Until next time…
